Hamburg TV Tower

Der goldene Handschuh

Hamburg TV Tower is where a planned restaurant visit gives Fiete a new view of Hamburg and turns sightseeing into a measure of the life he wants but doubts he can attain. Its panorama widens his sense of the city while bringing his ambitions for mobility, work, and companionship into focus.

The Visit and the View

On a Saturday, as part of a series of resolutions he has been following through, Fiete visits the restaurant in Hamburg TV Tower. The view overwhelms him. He realizes how much Hamburg has to offer, as though the city’s possibilities had been there all along but had not entered his awareness.

At a neighboring table, he overhears that Timmendorfer Strand on the Baltic Sea is less than a hundred kilometers away. The distance sounds manageable by car: with one, he thinks, the journey could be made in no time. The overheard conversation gives the panorama a practical extension, shifting his attention from what he can see to where he might go.

A View into Fiete’s Aspirations

The prospect of the coast immediately becomes a prospect of driving. Fiete wants a car, but assumes he will never manage to get a driving licence. He does not even know whether his brother Siggi has one; he reasons that if Siggi did, he would probably have heard about it. The thought exposes how quickly Fiete’s wish for movement meets uncertainty about his own capabilities.

The car belongs to a larger imagined future: steady employment, a home of his own, and a wife. The tower does not change Fiete’s circumstances, but its wide view makes possibility briefly concrete. What begins as a visit to a restaurant becomes a moment in which he can name the ordinary life he wants, even as the means of reaching it remain doubtful.
